Half Pipe, a full brother to world champion Wave Carver and multiple champion Ocean Runaway, topped the 2009 Heritage Place Quarter Horse Yearling Sale, which concluded on Sunday, September 19. The gray colt, sired by First Down Dash, sold to Lozano Mauro and the Half Pipe Syndicate for $325,000. He was consigned by Lucas Racing, New Market, MD, who sold his full brother, Oceans Apart, two weeks ago for $300,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

While the sale average decreased 10 percent from that of the record-setting 2008  sale (from $12,370 to $11,163), gross sales deceased just 3 percent. Total transactions tallied $9,756,250 on a catalog of 934 head.

“We are delighted with the outcome of this year’s sale,” said general manager Jeff Tebow. “We had a strong sale with all things considered. Our catalog was definitely stronger than it has been over the past several years and our results prove it.”

Six horses sold for $100,000 or more, up from five in 2008, and 18 went for $50,000 or more.

In addition to Half Pipe, those that sold for six-figures included the Corona Cartel daughter Silk ($185,000), a three-quarter sister to champion and world champion sire Stoli; Ima Ramblin On ($130,000), by Corona Cartel, a full sister to All American Futurity winner Teller Cartel; Miss Racy Jess ($120,000), by Mr Jess Perry; Teltel ($120,000), by Corona Cartel, from the family of Ima Ramblin On; and Marshall Law B ($115,000), by Corona Cartel and also from the same family as Ima Ramblin On and Teltel.

Corona Cartel, sire of 101 stakes winners and earners of more than $28 million, sired seven of the top 20 selling yearlings, while four were sired by Mr Jess Perry and three by First Down Dash.
