Jockey Jacky Martin has been diagnosed as being paralyzed below the neck, after further examination at the University Medical Center of El Paso on Saturday, according to his wife, Tracey.

Other reports have indicated that the paralysis could be temporary because of swelling around the spinal cord.

Martin, 56, was airlifted to the El Paso hospital Friday night from the Lincoln County Medical Center in Ruidoso.

Mrs. Martin, who is also his agent, said the Hall of Fame jockey could be moved to another facility within the next few days.

Martin was injured on Friday afternoon when his horse, Phire Power, broke down following the finish of the sixth race. Martin was thrown to the ground in the incident.

Martin had been scheduled to ride probable favorite Ochoa in Monday’s Grade 1, $2.4-million All American Futurity in his quest for a record-extending eighth All American Futurity win. He was also named to ride Prospect To The Top in the All American Derby and Noconi in the All American Gold Cup on Sunday.
