A showdown between Quarter racing’s two leading 2-year-olds, American Runaway and Llano Teller, gave veteran Hall of Fame rider Jacky Martin, 55, his fifth Rainbow Futurity win, aboard Hes Too Icy For Me on Sunday at Ruidoso Downs.

The win was worth $312,500 to Hes Too Icy For Me in his fourth career start. Fastest qualifier and Ruidoso Futurity winner American Runaway was second by a nose; Llano Teller finished seventh.

Hes Too Icy For Me is trained by Carlos Sedillo for Dolores and Robert Gerhardt. The gelded son of First Down Dash, a $36,000 purchase at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, raced 400 yards in :19.409 over a sloppy track.

“He didn’t break as well as he did in his trial,” Martin said of Hes Too Icy For Me’s start, where he veered out for several strides. “The seven horse (This Corona is Cold) had me beat about a half length and when I got by her, I could see American Runaway. He was coming at me at the end.

“This may be better than any win I’ve had,” added Martin, who has also won the All American Futurity a record seven times and recently returned to racing after a 4-year prohibition.

Hes To Icy For Me first gained attention at Sunland Park, when he finished sixth in the West Texas Futurity at 5-2 odds, after bucking during the race.

Sedillo then gelded the colt, passed on the Ruidoso Futurity in June, and pointed at the Rainbow Futurity trials, where Hes Too Icy For Me responded with a 1 1/4-length trial win and the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.491. His victory spoiled American Runaway’s bid to win the $4,000,000 All American Triple Crown bonus.

The complete order of finish in the Rainbow Futurity is Hes To Icy For Me, American Runaway, This Corona is Cold, Classy Nicole, Rock N Zoom, Quik Corona, Llano Teller, Bodacious Dash, Miss Barbra Allen and Dreams Fly By.
