Geoffrey Sheehan claimed his second Open Limited title yesterday aboard Dualin Cats Merada, with 220 points in the NCHA Derby John Deere Open division.

Jaime Beamer was second by a nose with 219.5 points riding GP Scooter Cat for Gil Porter.

“The two cows we watched were supposed to be good and they were,” said Sheehan. “That’s the best she’s been. I’ve just had bad luck on her lots of times.”

Sheehan, who also showed finalist (8th place) Sweet Little Kitten for Jayme DeResende, won the NCHA Futurity Open Limited on Jojo Boon, now owned by Steve Anderson, who qualified for Saturday’s Non-Pro Derby finals riding the Peptoboonsmal daughter.

“Before the Futurity, she was probably my favorite of the two,” said Sheehan of Dualin Cats Merada, by Cats Merada. “I trained her all the way through.”

Cal and Debbie Sanders purchased Dualin Cats Merada from Hope and John Mitchell (Hope Mitchell also owned and bred Jojo Boon). Sheehan is head trainer for Justice Farms in Camden, AR, owned by Hope Mitchell’s father, Arlis Justice.

A first for Fults

“When a horse makes me look good, that horse is really trained well,” said Alvin Fults, following his 217-point championship performance aboard Tassa Cat in the Matthews Cutting Horses NCHA Classic Challenge Non-Pro Limited.

Fults’ mount, Tassa Cat, by High Brow Cat, was trained by Beau Galyean, who showed Metallic Cat, also owned by Fults, to win the 2008 NCHA Futurity. This was the first win in Fort Worth for Fults, a commodities broker from Amarillo, TX, who has owned cutting horses for six years.

“Beau has been working the horse all week and he had him so good and so solid,” said Fults, who purchased his Limited slot after he lost a cow in the Non-Pro second go-round.

“I just went down there and had fun. My horse is six and it was his last hurrah here (in Will Rogers Coliseum). It was pretty exciting to end it like that with him.”

Tassa Cat, earner of nearly $200,000, began his career as an NCHA Futurity Open finalist under Jody Galyean, then won the 2008 Abilene Spectacular Non-Pro title with Beau Galyean, Jody’s son, who turned pro later that year.

Cassity Mitchell was reserve champion of the Non-Pro Limited with 216 points on Special Blue Bayou, by Blue Bayou Boon.
