Bill Cowan, Ardmore, Okla., scored 223 points riding Sweett Chaos, by Catty Hawk, to win the NCHA Metallic Cat Derby Non-Pro Intermediate on Wednesday, July 29. Cassie Cerny, Brazoria, Tex., claimed the reserve championship with 219 points on the Thomas E Hughes daughter Rose E, while Alexa Dahl, Granbury, Tex., placed third with 218 points aboard Smoothie Lou Who, by Smooth As A Cat.
Bill Cowan, the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame earner of $960,631, had shown Sweett Chaos in June as a Non-Pro finalist at the Non-Pro Plus at Ardmore. Bred by Cowan Ranch, out of Gar Bella Lena LTE $84,955, by Duals Blue Boon, Sweett Chaos is a full sister to Catty Bluz LTE $132,505. Bill Cowan had also shown both Gar Bella Lena and Catty Bluz, and his previous success at the NCHA Summer Spectacular included 2012 and 2015, when he placed third and fourth in the Derby Non-Pro Finals showing Sandy Boon LTE $66,543, by Peptoboonsmal, and Billies Catty LTE $225,578, by Catty Hawk, respectively.
Cassie Cerny, a Senior Youth competitor and earner of $18,403, had shown Rose E on Tuesday, July 28, as champion of the NCHA Derby Non-Pro Limited Finals, and in addition to her reserve in the Derby Non-Pro Intermediate on Wednesday, was also a Derby Non-Pro finalist tying with 216 points to split ten through 13.
Rose E LTE $15,883 was bred by Jodie Cerny, Cassie’s mother, and trained by her father, Clay Cerny, who also showed Rosie E in Ardmore, as Open Intermediate reserve champion and to place third in the Open Limited. Cassie also showed Rose E in Ardmore, to win the Non-Pro Limited championship.
Alexa Dahl, the NCHA Earner of $184,941, showed Smoothie Lou Who as reserve champion of the 2019 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited, and the pair have been on a streak in 2020 with over $27,000 earned in the Bonanza, the Non-Pro Plus, the Ike Hamilton Futurity, and the NCHA Derby. Smoothie Lou Who LTE $37,858 was bred by Beechfork Ranch, out of Reyal Money, an unshown Dual Rey daughter, whose dam, Money Talks Smart, by Smart Mate, is the producer of 15 earners of $580,386, including High Brow Jackson LTE $246,037 and Lil Jackson Cat LTE $118,741.
