Reyd, half-brother to major money earners Rambo Merada and Starched Wranglers, is the new kid on the block with his 217-point win under Lloyd Cox (pictured) in the West Texas Open Futurity. Fletches Hot Shot and Kathy Daughn claimed reserve with 216.

As a debut event for 3-year-olds, the West Texas Futurity is a weathervane for emerging talent and freshman sires.

Dual Rey continued his dominance as #2 leading sire of 2009 and as an all-time leading sire with Reyd’s victory, as well as with fifth-placed Smart Stingrey, also shown by Cox.

Cat Ichi garnered attention as the sire of four of the 18 Futurity Open finalists from his first crop: Mary Ichi and SDP Lil Ichi Maddie, ridden by Guy Woods, as well as Daintys Ichi Playboy with Craig Thompson, and Teri Ahki under Josh Townsend.

CD Lights, a leading freshman sire with his first crop in 2008, sired West Texas Futurity Ltd Open champion Lights N Quixote, ridden by Terry Hollis.

Lloyd Cox was the leading rider of the West Texas Open Futurity with the champion and two other finalists, including Dual Stranger, by Dual Pep, and total earnings of $22,500 ($12,500 as champion).

Kathy Daughn also showed Blues Stylish Cat, by High Brow Cat, to place fourth and earn a total of $19,500.
