Catillac Reys, the first horse to show in the last set of the first round of the Open Derby, marked 224 to lead the round with Adan Banuelos Sunday at the NCHA/Metallic Cat Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth.

Justin Chalmers posted the first round’s second high score, 223, on Saturday riding Reystylin Smooth. Sean Flynn on Paula Wood’s Cool N Hot, and Jesse Lennox on Rocking P Ranch’s Summer Shandy, both marked 221.5 Sunday for the third high score.

Leader Catillac Reys was bred by Michelle Cannon, by Metallic Cat out of Brazos Bash champion Tootsie Rey, an earner of $200,876. The gelding is owned by Todd and Elizabeth Quirk’s Ten/27 Ranch, and was Non-Pro reserve champion at the Ike Hamilton Futurity this spring with Elizabeth.

Hall of Fame Rider Adan Banuelos placed third with Catillac Reys at the Bonanza, and has been a finalist at Abilene and Arbuckle Mountain.

Tying for Sunday’s second high score of 221.5, Cool N Hot is bred and owned by Paula Wood of Stephenville, Texas. He is by Hottish out of Donas Cool Cat, an earner of $315,014 and producer of $944,154, including Donas Suen Boon, the mare that Wood won the Non-Pro NCHA Futurity with in 2012.

Cool N Hot won the NCHA Super Stakes and the Bonanza with Kobie Wood, and was reserve champion at the Breeders Invitational with Sean Flynn. He has earned $231,699, and his 2018 earnings of $196,136 make him the top NCHA money earner to date of the calendar year.

Also with 221.5 on Sunday, Summer Shandy is ridden by NCHA Hall of Famer Jesse Lennox for Rocking P Ranch. The mare was bred by Crown Ranch and sold for $375,000 at the 2016 Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales.

She is by Metallic Cat out of Pippis Longstocking, an NCHA Futurity Non-Pro finalist with Chad Bushaw. Summer Shandy has been an Open finalist in the Breeders Invitational, Arbuckle Mountain and Bonanza. She has lifetime earnings of $28,850.

A total of 136 horses marked 214 our better to advance to Monday’s second round of the NCHA Derby.
