Cash Lee Carpenter, Silverton, Tex., scored 218 points on Thursday riding Iggy Katzalea to win the 2018 NCHA/Metallic Cat Summer Spectacular Derby Rios of Mercedes Amateur championship. Kristin Spencer Morais, Pilot Point, Tex., claimed the reserve championship with 217.5 points on Wherever I May Roan, while Katona Imre, Hajduszoboszlo, Hungary, placed third with 215.5 points aboard Zen And Tonic.

This was the first major limited age event win for Carpenter, the NCHA earner of $41,121, who was reserve champion of the 2016 Waco Texas Futurity Amateur Classic and the 2015 West Texas Futurity Amateur Classic on Mistakenly Metallic LTE $66,178.

Iggy Katzalea LTE $4,518 carried Carpenter as a semi-finalist in the 2017 NCHA Futurity Amateur and as a finalist in the 2018 Cattlemen’s Derby Non-Pro. The Kit Kat Sugar daughter was bred by Penny Carpenter out of Smart Sandhill Kay LTE $46,141, a half-sister to Smart Stingrey LTE $261,718, the 2015 NCHA Open Reserve World Champion.

Cash Carpenter showed Smart Sandhill Kay as a 2012 NCHA Summer Spectacular Junior Youth finalist. He also showed Smart Style Rey LTE $6,778, a half-brother, by Stylish Rey, to Iggy Katzalea, this year as a finalist in the NCHA Super Stakes Amateur and Amateur Unlimited divisions.

Kristin Morais’ mount, Wherever I May Roan LTE $8,010, by Metallic Cat, represents the third generation of money earners bred by her parents, Brett and Tara Spencer. The NCHA earner of $49,188, Morais placed sixth in the 2008 NCHA Classic Challenge Classic and won the Bonanza Amateur Classic on Wherever I May Roan’s maternal granddam, Ima Cuttin Monkey LTE $27,796, by Chics Smart Money. In 2014, she was reserve champion of the Abilene Spectacular riding the Im Countin Checks daughter Shesa Funky Monkey LTE $18,448, dam of Wherever I May Roan.

Katona Imre, who is also a member of the Czech/Slovak NCHA, is the NCHA earner of $5,676. His NCHA Derby mount, Zen And Tonic LTE $122,291, by High Brow CD, won the 2017 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited, as well as eight more Non-Pro or Non-Pro Limited championships in 2018 with Lance Cooper.
