Mandy Chisum of San Luis Obispo, California and her 5-year-old gelding Magic Metalman posted the top score of 221 in the first round of the Mercuria NCHA World Series of Cutting July 10 at the Calgary Stampede.
They lead a field of 10 contestants heading for the finals to be held on Wednesday. The first round of the Open is scheduled for Tuesday.
This will be the third Mercuria finals for Chisum, who has NCHA earnings of more than $379,000. She previously showed in Houston in 2014 and at the Pacific Coast Derby last year.
Her biggest limited age wins include the 2013 Tunica Non-Pro Classic and the 2013 Breeders Invitational Unlimited Amateur on Woodys Wildest Cat; and this year’s Ike Hamilton Non-Pro Classic on Cats Double Down.
Magic Metalman is a gelding bred by Alvin Fults by Metallic Cat out of Sweet Abra with earnings of more than $63,000. He and Chisum were Non-Pro finalists this spring at the NCHA Super Stakes Classic and the Breeders Invitational
Magic Metalman is a full brother to Metallic Rebel, the top money-earning cutting horse so far of calendar year 2017.
