Time For The Diamond, sired by One Time Pepto, and owned, trained and shown by Nick Dowers, Dyer, Nev., scored a total of 661 points to earn $100,000 as open champion of the 2013 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, on Saturday, October 5. It was Dowers’ first trip to the open finals.

Blind Sided, by Peptoboonsmal, earned 656 points and $70,000 under Jay McLaughlin for Aaron Ranch, as reserve champion, while One Big Time Secret, by One Time Pepto, placed third with 654.5 points with Corey Cushing for Karilyn Crolius.

Time For The Diamond and One Big Time Secret accounted for two of four from the 10 highest-scoring open finalists sired by One Time Pepto, a leading sire of 2012 NRCHA and NCHA competitors, with offspring earnings of $5 million. One Time Pepto-sired Rubys Radar, under Zane Davis for Billie Filippini, and Hickory Holly Time, with Kelby Phillips for Garth and Amanda Gardiner, placed fifth and tenth, respectively. Peptos Shiney Pistol, also by One Time Pepto, was 22nd with Todd Bergen.

It was Garth and Amanda Gardiner, Ashland, Kan., who bred Time For The Diamond and consigned him as a yearling to the 2011 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale, where Dowers fell in love with him. “I saw his head and neck sticking out of the stall and I was, like, wow, he’s got the prettiest head and neck of any horse here. And that’s what drew me too him.”

NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales results
The 2013 NRCHA Snafflle Bit Futurity Sales grossed $1,729,400 on the sale of 172 horses for an average of $10,055.

Smart Travelin Chic, a 2007 bay mare bred to WR This Cats Smart, was the sale topper at $67,000. The Smart Chic Olena daughter out of Travelin With Sass, a leading NRCHA dam with offspring earnings of $227,687 from 3 performers, was consigned by Flag Ranch and purchased by G2 Performance Horses, Red Lodge, MT.

Two yearlings brought $50,000, the second-highest price of the sale. One Time Zanolena, a colt sired by One Time Pepto and out of NRCHA Open Derby champion Smart Zanolena, was consigned by Matt Day and sold to Billy Grissom, Stevinson, Calif. Boonarita, by Peptoboonsmal out of Shiney Senorita, by Shining Spark, and consigned by Gardiner Quarter Horses, went to Joyce Esernia, Indian Wells, Calif.
