Seventy-four-year-old Butch Shaver and Lasso My Colors marked 217 for a one-point win over a trio of reserve champions Friday in the $15,000 Amateur finals at the NCHA Eastern National Championships presented by 6666 Ranch in Jackson, Mississippi.

Shaver worked first in the second set of the finals to overtake the leaders at that point, Dylan Brewer and Bradley Newman.

Lasso My Colors is an APHA World Show champion by Color Me Smart out of Haidas Little Lass. Shaver was an NCHA Super Stakes Amateur finalist on the mare in 2006.

Shaver, who has been an NCHA member since 2003, has been a finalist in several NCHA Triple Crown events, but this was his first ride in the finals at the Eastern National Championships.

Sharing the reserve title with 216 points were Dylan Brewer, Paul Coleman and Bradley Newman.

Brewer rode Zacks Tiana Doc, a Zack T Wood mare that NCHA World Champion Dan Hansen showed to win the the Big Sky Futurity in 2008.

Coleman rode Triple Ya Bet, a Bet On Me 498 gelding that he also rode in the finals of last year’s $15,000 Amateur class at the Eastern Nationals.

Newman rode Haidas Lil Shorty, a son of Haidas Little Pep that has earned more than $25,000.
