Canine military hospital opens in Texas

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Military dogs will benefit from state-of-the-art technology at the new $13 million veterinary hospital at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, TX. Lackland is the only base in the U.S. that trains dogs for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.

“We act as the ‘Walter Reed’ of the veterinary world,” said U.S. Army Col. Bob Vogelsang, the hospital’s director. “We are the support organization for the 341st Air Force Training Squadron, which is responsible for acquiring, training and distributing the dogs. But the Army is the only branch with veterinarians so we provide the veterinary care.” (more…)

Neiman Marcus original

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Recent political debate over expensive campaign clothing tabs from Neiman Marcus brought to mind the late Fern Sawyer, one of the founders of the National Cutting Horse Association.

Born into a hardscrabble West Texas ranching family in 1917, Sawyer became an ardent Neiman’s customer soon after oil was discovered on the U.D. Sawyer ranch in the 1940s. To celebrate the occasion, U.D. and Dessie Sawyer gave Fern and her sister Myrl each $50,000 for a Dallas shopping spree. Fern spent $27,000 the first day.

“Fern had a lot of passions,” said Myrl Good of her sister, during a special exhibition of Fern’s western wardrobe at Neiman’s in Fort Worth in 1999. “Her first passion was riding horses and the second was to be well dressed when she was riding a horse. (more…)

Raven’s Pass upsets Curlin in Breeders’ Cup Classic

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Raven’s Pass, who has raced exclusively on the turf in Europe and had never gone past a mile, upset defending champion Curlin this afternoon in the $5 million, 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.

Four-year-old Curlin, North America’s all-time leading money earner, was sent to post as the 4 to 5 favorite under his regular rider Robby Albarado. Albarado made his bid in the turn, drove clear on the outside, but was overtaken by Raven’s Pass, at 13 to 1 under Lanfranco Dettori, in the stretch. Henrythenavigator, another European runner, placed second at 19 to 1 in the 12-horse field; Tiago at 4 to 1 was third; and Curlin finished fourth. (more…)

Dual wins for Julie Hansma in Southern Cutting Futurity

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Julie Hansma scored dual 222-point wins this week during the Southern Futurity in Jackson, MS, riding full brothers sired by Dual Pep out of Capoo by CD Olena. Four-year-old Al Poocino earned Hansma the non-pro championship of the Southern Derby, while 6-year-old Bob Dualin carried her for the Classic win. Dustin Adams placed as Southern Derby Non-Pro reserve champion with 217 points on Masqeurey; Barbara Brooks and Nurse Nellie claimed reserve in the Classic with 218 points.

Hansma and husband Paul, top 10 trainer and manager of Bar H Ranche, home of Dual Pep and CD Olena, raised Al Poocino and Bob Dualin, whose third dam, Super Poo, was Paul’s reined cowhorse before he turned to cutting. Super Poo’s sire, Pima Country, was a race winner sired by Parker’s Trouble, at one time a leading sire of race ROM. Her dam’s sire, Tinky Poo, was also a race winner with race winning offspring.
