Cattlemens Derby and Classic – March 11, 2018 – Graham. Texas

Lance Cooper, Weatherford, Tex., scored 222 points on Zen And Tonic to win the Cattlemen’s Non-Pro Derby. Lee Holsey, Lovelady, Tex., took reserve with 218 points, and Nadine Payne, Overbrook, Okla., and Regan Plendl, Kingsley, Iowa each scored 217 to split third and fourth.

This was the third major 2018 win for 17-year-old Cooper and Zen And Tonic, who claimed the Abilene Spectacular Non-Pro and Arbuckle Mountain Non-Pro championships, as well as the reserve championship of the Bonanza Non-Pro.  In addition, the pair earned the top payout in the Non-Pro Limited division of each event, as well as in the Ike Hamilton, where they also placed fifth in the Non-Pro Finals.

Last December in Fort Worth, Cooper won NCHA World Finals Senior Youth on Light N Lily, then won the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited championship and placed eleventh in the Non-Pro Finals on Zen And Tonic. Together Cooper and Zen And Tonic, by High Brow CD, have earned $87,484.

Lee Holsey showed the Smooth As A Cat daughter Smooth Lil Cowtown LTE $68,532, who was reserve champion of the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro under Brandon Westfall and an open semi-finalist with Russ Westfall. Last year, Holsey won the 4-Year-Old Non-Pro Limited divisions of the Pacific Coast Derby and the Ike Hamilton Futurity aboard Cowtown Lucy, and the Cattlemen’s 5/6 Non-Pro Limited on Laureyna.

Riding Cats Lightning Rey, by NRR Cat King Cole, Regan Plendl, in addition to her Non-Pro Finals earnings, also collected first-place money in the Non-Pro Gelding and Novice divisions, and placed second in the Non-Pro Limited. Regan won the 2017 Arbuckle Mountain 4-Year-Old Non-Pro on Mr Metallic Rey and the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro on Mr Kenli.

Nadine Payne, winner of 21 non-pro titles, including the 2014 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro, on Great Expectations, and the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro, on Velvets Revolver, showed Peaceful EZ Feeling, the Lizzys Gotta Player daughter that she showed to win the non-pro championships of the 2017 Southern Futurity and the Brazos Bash, and placed second with in the Cotton Stakes Non-Pro.
