Cutting sire catches top race sire

For the first time in history, a cutting horse sire has surpassed the leading Quarter race sire in annual offspring earnings. During the calendar year 2007, according to NCHA and AQHA records to be published in the February issue of Cutting Horse Chatter, High Brow Cat’s cutting offspring earned $5,637,556 compared to leading 2007 race sire Corona Cartel’s total of $5,302,136.

High Brow Cat’s leading money earner in 2007 was High Brow CD, 2007 NCHA Futurity champion with $250,000; his second-highest earner was Hydrive Cat with $149,890. The top cutting horse money earner in 2007 was San Tule Uno (2003), by San Tule Freckles, winner of the MillionHeir Cutting, with $357,851 ($300,000 from the MillionHeir).

Corona Cartel’s major money earner, with $1,004,829, was Eye For Corona, winner of the Golden State Million Futurity and runner-up to One Famous Eagle in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Corona Cartel (1994) has sired the earners of $24.7 million.

Thoroughbred racing’s leading sire in 2007 was Smart Strike with $14.3 million. His top money earner of the year was Preakness winner Curlin with $5.1 million in earnings.

First Down Dash (1984) is the all-time Quarter race sire with $63.7 million. Smart Little Lena is the all-time leading sire of cutting horses with $35.1 million.

High Brow Cat (1988), the #2 all-time cutting sire with lifetime offspring earnings of $24.7 million, is owned by Waggoner Ranch and stands at DLR Stallion Station, Weatherford, TX for $22,500. He is advertised as booked full for 2008.

Corona Cartel, the property of a syndicate, stands for $40,000 at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, OK. Smart Strike stands at Lane’s End Farms in Versialles, KY for $150,000.
