Ryder Carpenter and Hangem Cat nailed a 221-point performance last night to upset Isidro Sigala and Sofie Rey, who set the standard with 220 points in the first set of the Super Stakes Classic Amateur<\/a> Finals.<\/p>\n

It was the first major win for 17-year-old Carpenter, who placed sixth in the 2008 NCHA Amateur Derby, but has previously shown primarily on weekends.<\/p>\n

“He went and hit some big time stops,” said Carpenter of Hangem High’s performance. “I haven’t shown him a lot, but he was really good for me here.”<\/p>\n

Ryder’s mother, Penny Cogdell Carpenter, daughter of Billy Cogdell, breeder of NCHA Futurity champion Shania Cee, purchased Hangem Cat in November 2010 from Jeremy Landry.<\/p>\n

The 2005 gelded son of High Brow Cat had been trained and shown as a major 4 and 5-year-old money earner by Wesley Galyean.<\/p>\n

Ryder’s friend, Taylor Carbo, showed Hangem High late in his campaign as 2010 NCHA Senior Youth World Champion, and Jeremy Barwick showed the gelding as reserve champion of the 2011 Bonanza Open.<\/p>\n

Ryder’s Super Stakes winner’s payout of $5,078 boosted Hangem Cat’s official NCHA lifetime earnings to $200,354.<\/p>\n

Isidro Sigala and his 5-year-old Dual Rey daughter Sofie Rey won two major amatuer championships in 2010 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the Breeders Invitational and the Southern Futurity, prior to last night’s event.<\/p>\n

“My mare was really good and stopped the cows,” said Sigala.<\/p>\n

Trainer Lee Francois, who just won the 2011 NCHA Super Stakes Classic<\/a> on Reys Desire, placed as a finalist on Sophie Rey for Sigala in the 2011 Abilene Spectacular Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
