Mary Ann Rapp, winner of the 2002 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity riding Little Janey Lena, scored 218.5 points on Friday, to top the last day of Non-Pro second-round competition on Shrimp Shack Shooter, by Smooth As A Cat at the Borden Milk NCHA Futurity.<\/p>\n

Rapp had scored 215.5 points in the first go-round to give her a combined score of 434 points.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Laura Fenimore, with a cumulative go-rounds score of 436 points on Misplaced Cat, retained her position as leading contender going into the Non-Pro Semi-Finals.<\/p>\n

Shrimp Shack Shooter was slated for the NCHA Open Futurity with Rapp’s husband, Phil, until two days before the first go-round, when the gelding pulled up sore.<\/p>\n

“Phil was supposed to show him, instead of my mare (Lahaina Lena) that he ended up showing,” said Mary Ann.<\/p>\n

All-time NCHA money earner Phil Rapp qualified two horses for the Open Semi-Finals: Smooth Bye Design (435 points), owned by Smoothe Design Ltd, and Mary Ann’s mare, Lahaina Lena (434 points).<\/p>\n

“She’s the kind of horse that takes a lot of time, one-on-one,” said Phil Rapp of Lahiana Lena, one of the last foals out of Rapp’s great show mare and producer, Tap O Lena.<\/p>\n

“When I got the flu in July, I couldn’t ride for almost two weeks, so Mary Ann started riding Lahiana Lena and she got along really well with her. Mary Ann did an outstanding job of training her.”<\/p>\n

Shrimp Shack Shooter, by Smooth As A Cat, out of Awesome Autumn, was purchased by the Rapps from the Awesome Autumn Partnership. Following the purchase, the Rapp’s changed the gelding’s name to Shrimp Shack Shooter, after a band from the 1996 Tom Hanks movie That Thing You Do!<\/p>\n

Redneck Yachtclub, a 2004 gelded son of San Tule Freckles and shown by both Phil and Mary Ann to earn $500,000, was named for a Craig Morgan song.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
