\"\"Zenyatta’s victory in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic was not the last million-dollar race contested on Saturday in Southern California. That distinction went to the $1 million Los Alamitos Super Derby; a 400-yard test for 3-year-old Quarter Horses, won by Foose, last year’s champion 2-year-old colt.<\/p>\n

Foose was clear of his Super Derby rivals midway down the stretcth to win by a 1\/2 length in 19.45. Jockey Ramon Sanchez, who earlier this year won the $1.9 million All American Futurity with Running Brook Gal, claimed a record sixth Super Derby victory with Foose, who he rode for trainer Paul Jones and owner Ed Allred.<\/p>\n

This was the second million-dollar victory for Foose, who won the Ed Burke Million Futurity last year. The Stel Corona-sired colt earned $398,160 in the Super Derby to take his lifetime earnings to $1,496,938. The victory also earned him a berth in this year’s $750,000 Champion of Champions, at Los Alamitos on December 12. His was the final “win and you’re in” berth to the race that includes three-time track record holder and number one ranked Freaky.<\/p>\n

“We’ll probably need Freaky to have a bad day, in order to beat him in the Champion of Champions,” said Jones, who has won four Super Derbies, including the 2006 running with Wave Carver.<\/p>\n

Foose now joins an elite group of horses, including champions Ocean Runaway and Stolis Winner, that have won two or more races with purses worth $1 million or more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
