An image cast in bronze that reflects the power and grace, grit and glory of a cowboy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s horse and a cowboy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s life \u00e2\u20ac\u201c no other twentieth century artist could capture the moment as perfectly as the late Jim Reno<\/a> whose larger than life-size commissions are legend, including monumental works of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s two greatest race horses in their respective fields \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Secretariat and Dash For Cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of Reno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s smaller-scaled pieces, however, were based on\npersonal experience. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I usually have something in mind down the road,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he told\nme, as a prelude to the story behind a piece he called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153A Montana Morning,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d inspired\nby an incident on the John Scott Ranch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153A horse was standing tied to a fence and he broke loose,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Reno\nrecalled. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The saddle went under his belly and he started bucking and kicking\nthat saddle apart. And this cowboy on a horse was trying to catch him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Afterwards, I took photos of that cowboy. He had a Montana\ncrease in his hat, and he had on gloves and a Levi jacket, and fringed chaps, and\na Montana-looking saddle. When I got home, I got my photographs out and went to\nwork.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip Hobbs, an NCHA competitor and 1973 Youth World Champion, owns a limited edition of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Too Much Rope,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a piece that exemplifies Reno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s special talent for depicting a horse and rider in action. Because a photo of it appeared in the May 1977 issue of the Quarter Horse Journal<\/em>, Hobbs knows the piece was created before 1977, but beyond that fact he would like to know more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
