{"id":1528,"date":"2009-07-12T21:25:59","date_gmt":"2009-07-13T02:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sallyharrison.com\/?p=1528"},"modified":"2009-07-12T21:30:14","modified_gmt":"2009-07-13T02:30:14","slug":"spencer-childers-1912-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sallyharrison.com\/?p=1528","title":{"rendered":"Spencer Childers 1912-2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sallyharrison.com\/features\/pix\/2009\/Childers.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=54iSRdGA07g\">Spencer Childers<\/a>, ranked fifth among all-time leading breeders of Quarter racehorses, died on July 9 at age 97.<\/p>\n<p>Childers&#8217; first horses were ropers that he competed on in the early 1940s. In 1957, he purchased Black Easter Bunny, a former champion 3-year-old race mare, and he and his wife, Florence, began breeding running horses on their ranch in Fresno, CA.<\/p>\n<p>Black Easter Bunny&#8217;s second foal, Bunny&#8217;s Bar Maid, by Three Bars TB, put Childers Ranch in the spotlight, when she was made 1961 champion 2-year-old filly.
