Justin Chalmers and HC Herd Boss, owned by Eddie and Barbara Young, San Angelo, Tex., scored 225 points for an unassailable win in the NCHA Derby Limited Open, on Wednesday, August 2. Brett McGlothlin and his own horse, Somethingtobelievein, earned the reserve championship with 219 points, and Kody Porterfield scored 216.5 points for third place on Santallico Cat, owned by Greg and Shelly Coalson, Weatherford, Tex.<\/p>\n

Justin Chalmers, the NCHA earner of $33,436, also showed HC Herd Boss to win the 2017 Abilene Spectacular Limited Open championship, and placed third with the gelding in the Cattlemen’s Derby Limited Open.<\/p>\n

HC Herd Boss LTE $14,539 was bred by Eddie and Barbara Young, who also own his sire, Herding Cats. HC Herd Boss is one of four performers, all of them 4-year-olds, sired by Herding Cats. HC Tailgate Date LTE $59,612 has placed in four major 4-year-old events under Wes Ashlock, including the NCHA Super Stakes. Herding Instincts LTE $25,720 won the 2017 NCHA Super Stakes Unlimited Amateur, Unlimited Amateur Senior, and Unlimited Amateur Gelding with Gary Rosenbach, while Eddie Young showed Herding Reys LTE $20,586 as reserve champion of the NCHA Super Stakes Unlimited Amateur and Unlimited Amateur Senior.<\/p>\n

Chalmers and HC Herd Boss have also qualified for the NCHA Derby Open Semi-Finals to be held on Saturday, August 5.<\/p>\n

Brett McGlothlin, the NCHA earner of $336,003, has shown Somethingtobelievein as an Open finalist in the Augusta Futurity and the Cattlemen’s Derby, as well as a Limited Open finalist in the NCHA Super Stakes.<\/p>\n

Somethingtobelievein, by Hydrive Cat, made her career debut as the 2016 NCHA Futurity Limited Non-Pro champion under Brett\u2019s wife, Jody, who also showed the mare as reserve champion of the Augusta Futurity Non-Pro. The pair were also finalists in the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro and Non-Pro Limited, as well as finalists in the Cattlemen’s Derby Non-Pro.<\/p>\n

Brett McGlothin and Somethingtobelievein, with 439 points, are among the top qualifiers for Saturday\u2019s Open Semi-Finals. Jody and Somethingtobelievein also qualified for the Limited Non-Pro Finals, and as Non-Pro second go-round contenders.<\/p>\n

Kody Porterfield, the NCHA earner of $154,260, won the 2015 NCHA Futurity Limited Open on This Isa Third LTE $133,223 and also placed third with the gelding in the Futurity Open Finals. Porterfield also won the 2017 Abilene Spectacular Limited Open on Hey Mr Buddy Boy and placed as reserve champion on Fantastic One.<\/p>\n

Santallico Cat, by Metallic Cat, was bred by Greg Coalson, a leading contender on Juana Bet, by Bet Hesa Cat, for Thursday\u2019s NCHA Derby Non-Pro second go-round. Both Santallico Cat and Juana Bet are descended on their dams\u2019 side from Quejanamia, the dam of Coalson-bred and shown Quejanaisalena LTE $329,571 and Quejanapep $329,571.<\/p>\n

Day Two: Derby Non-Pro first go-round<\/strong>
\nSydney Roland, Murchison, Tex., with 219 points aboard Smart Dual Kat, was the high-scoring rider on the last day of NCHA Derby Non-Pro \/ Non-Pro Limited first go-round competition. Sydney shares the first round high score with Elizabeth Quirk, who showed on Tuesday. Sydney will advance to Saturday\u2019s NCHA Derby Non-Pro Limited Finals, while Elizabeth returns on Thursday in the second go-round of the Non-Pro.<\/p>\n

Smart Dual Kat, by Dual Smart Rey, was bred by Eddie and Barbara Young, owners and breeders of HC Herd Boss, the 2017 NCHA Derby Limited Open champion. Smart Dual Kat LTE $38,503, owned by Sydney\u2019s parents, Lee and Holly Francois, carried Holly as champion of the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Limited, as well as the champion of the Breeders Invitational Non-Pro Limited. Holly Francois will also ride Smart Dual Kat in Thursday’s second round of the Non-Pro, after marking a 214 on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Sydney, the NCHA earner of $28,544, placed eighth in the 2018 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited, when she was 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
