Juanita Steen on Bugsy Maloy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Juanita Steen, 72, of Glenn’s Ferry, Idaho, marked 222 on Bugsy Maloy to win the $15,000 Amateur finals<\/a> Monday at the 6666 Ranch NCHA Western National Championships in Denver.<\/p>\n

She was a $10,000 Amateur finalist with Bugsy Maloy at the Western Nationals in 2009, but this was her first major event win on the 13-year-old gelding.<\/p>\n

Bugsy Maloy was bred by Kelly and Janice Cornforth by Bugs Valentino out of Downtroden, who was a daughter of $256,000 earner Freckles Docs Oak. The gelding’s career earnings will pass $25,000 with his win in Denver.<\/p>\n

Steen marked 215 in the go-round to tie for the seventh high score, behind Kara Nielsen with a 219 on Leave N Las Vegas. In the finals, her 222 gave her a 5 1\/2-point cushion over reserve champion Gail Costello of Scottsdale, Arizona.<\/p>\n

Costello rode Joes Midnight Son, a 16-year-old San Jo Lena gelding that has earned $90,000.<\/p>\n

Regan Plendl on Rey Nounce.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Regan Plendl of Kingsley, Iowa, and Rey Nounce picked up their second championship of the Western Nationals in the $35,000 Non-Pro finals on Sunnday.<\/p>\n

Their 221 gave them a one-point lead over Virginia Kilduff of Prescott Valley, Arizona, on Wood I Jazz.<\/p>\n

Despite drawing last in the first set of the finals, Plendl found the cows she needed for a winning score in the $35,000 Non-Pro. A day earlier, she won the Junior Youth finals while working first in the draw.<\/p>\n

Rey Nounce is a Dual Rey x Peek A Boon 9-year-old bred by Double Dove Ranch.<\/p>\n

Reserve champion Virginia Kilduff rode Wood I Jazz, a 12-year-old Zack T Wood mare hat has earned over $50,000.<\/p>\n
