Jerry Wells, 1941-2008

Jerry Wells, 67, who claimed 59 AQHA world championship titles, passed away on Saturday, May 3rd at 2:20 a.m., at Baptist Medical Center, Norman, Oklahoma.

Wells grew up on a dairy farm in Sulphur, OK and as a young man apprenticed under Matlock Rose and George Tyler. Beginning with Otoe, the first AAA-rated race horse to be named grand champion, and Kid Meyers, the first AQHA Supreme Champion, Wells went on to claim 59 AQHA World Championships at halter, with Impressive, Conclusive, The Investor, Boston Mac. Double L Straw and Te N Te, among many others.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 7th at First Baptist Church, 901 Division St., Sulphur, OK 73080 at 2 p.m. (580) 622-2550. Viewing will be at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St., Norman, OK 73072 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. (405) 329-0101.

Legendary horses associated with Wells’ included Otoe, Impressive, Boston Mac, Conclusive, The Invester, Cluition, Double L Straw, Man In Command and Three Chicks. He was also co-owner of 1988 All American Futurity winner Merganser. Click here for video interview with Jerry Wells on Merganser.
