Fancy Hughes, ridden by Kenny Platt for Reed and Sheryl McClymont, Holdrege, Neb., scored an overwhelming 226-point win on Monday, September 29, in the Brazos Bash Open Futurity. The $23,000 winner’s prize represented the second consecutive 3-year-old champion’s title for the daughter of Thomas E Hughes, bred by the McClymonts out of Choice Jewels, by SR Instant Choice. In August, she won the Idaho Futurity, worth $12,737.

DMAC Spicy Spoon, shown by James Payne for Kathleen Moore, Madill, Okla., claimed reserve with 220 points, while Smooth Serena Rey, with Geoffrey Sheehan for Toddy Pitard, El Dorado, Ark., was third with 219 points.

Junie Wood, 2013 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro champion with Craig Crumpler, and 2014 NCHA Super Stakes champion under John Mitchell for Slate River Ranch, Weatherford, Tex., took the Brazos Bash 4-year-old championship and first-place money of $20,000 with 225.5 points. The Nitas Wood daughter, a full sister to Woody Be Tuff, sire of 2012 NCHA Futurity co-champion CR Tuff Hearted Cat, is the official NCHA earner of $242,949.

Spoonful Of Stella, shown by Jason Clark for Wrigley Ranches, Weatherford, Tex., placed second with 224 points; RW Rockin, shown by Lloyd Cox for Monty Johnson, Weatherford, Tex., was third with 220 points.

Spoonful Of Stella, by Hes A Peptospoonful and out of 2000 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro champion Stella Starlight, also won the Cotton Stakes Derby in September under Clark.

Once In A Blu Boon, with 10 major limited age event championship titles to his name, claimed his eleventh with 226 points in the Classic Open under James Payne. The 6-year-old son of Peptoboonsmal is owned by Charlotte Farms, Rosston, Tex., owned by Jill Freeman, widow of the stallion’s breeder and legendary trainer, Bill Freeman.

Once In A Blu Boon, the official NCHA earner of $299,000, is out of Autumn Boon, a leading producer of earners of over $1.5 million.

Reserve champion of the Brazos Bash Classic, Short N Smooth,scored 225 points with Jason Clark for owner Darren Blanton, Dallas, Tex, who won the 2012 Brazos Bash Non-Pro champion’s title riding the Smooth As A Cat sired gelding. Including his Brazos Bash winnings, 6-year-old Short N Smooth has lifetime earnings of $249,000.

Six-year-old Cat Belue, by High Brow Cat, placed third in the Classic with 224 points, under Geoffrey Sheehan for Charles Burger, Chatsworth, Ga.

The Brazos Bash, held at Silverado Arena in Weatherford, Tex., concludes its 11-day run on October 5 with the amateur finals.
